I'm a veteran of language learning apps for Japanese, because I need to learn and don't live anywhere I could go for more formal classes. The truth is, none of them is perfect. Mondly is good for teaching you everyday vocabulary and grammar, and is mostly easy to use and fun. It falls down occasionally on the chatbot, and I've located occasional errors, but the fact I can identify the errors suggests I'm making progress, so... Better than DuoLingo, and probably on a par with Busuu.

Ok so the apps good but during the speaking exercise or "Hands free" (I think that's the name they use) you can't turn off romaji so it's kinda annoying. So if possible in the next update could you make it so you can turn romaji off in the hands free exercise? as you can turn it off with other exercises. Or at least have a option to enable furigana in the speaking exercises. Also a lot of the stuff seems to be locked behind a pay wall.

I went Premium, but it isn't really worth it. There is no sensible progression through the lesson topics. You are expected to pick up Kanji after seeing it once, or not at all in some cases. It presents an entire sentence with Kanji that you've not been exposed to and expects you to reconstruct the sentence. Same with vocab. It isn't taught entirely. It's sporadic. Furthermore, the voice recognition is rough at times. Save your money. I won't renew.

Hi,
Thanks for the review. Our approach follows the most natural and effective language-learning process: you learn new words in isolation followed by the words being placed in certain contexts. As for the voice recognition issue, please contact us at android@mondly.com and let us know what exactly is happening, we'll help right away.
Best,
Mondly
